Vincent D. JOHNSON

Vincent D. JOHNSON, 89, formerly of Fairfield, died Monday, July 13, 2015, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown where he had been a resident since 2009 (note: in Marshall Co., IA).

A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa, with the Rev. Brian "Pete" Hagglund officiating. The body has been cremated.

Inurnment will be in McIntire Cemetery (note: in Wapello Co., IA), with military services conducted by O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post No. 775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The family will be present one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials for the Iowa Veterans Home Chapel can be sent to Karol CARR, 262 Main St., Carthage, IL 62321 or Kathleen KESSEL, 709 S. Second St., Fairfield 52556.

Mr. JOHNSON was born June 18, 1926, in Haydock in rural Monroe County, the son of Verner and Stella ENGSTROM JOHNSON. He married Harriet Joan McCARROLL Dec. 17, 1950, in Ottumwa. They divorced. He married Nadine ANDERSON CONDON Sept. 4, 1976, in Fairfield. She died July 21, 2014.

Mr. JOHNSON was a World War II veteran. He served with the U.S. Army. He was a 1952 graduate of University of Iowa. He was co-owner and operator of the Book Nook in Ottumwa from 1984 to 1996.

He was an active member of the Lutheran church in all communities where he lived.

He was a member of the Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow.

Survivors include: daughters, Karen BAUMGART of Maryland and Denise MARTIN of Des Moines; step-children, Kristine CONDON of Altoona, Karol CARR of Carthage, Illinois, Kathleen KESSEL of Fairfield, Karin CONDON of Dodgeville, Wisconsin, and Kirk CONDON of Fairfield; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Walter F. JOHNSON.
