Viola Genevieve POHREN NORTON

Viola Genevieve POHREN NORTON, 96, of Cedar Falls and formerly of Washington, Iowa, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015, at Bickford Cottage in Cedar Falls.

A celebration of life service is set for 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa, with the Rev. Teddy Widdel officiating. Interment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Brighton (note: in Washington Co., IA).

Visitation began at noon today at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends 5-7 p.m.

Mrs. NORTON was born March 5, 1918, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Christian and Lydia KERN POHREN. She married Dale V. NORTON May 7, 1936, in Fairfield. He died Jan. 22, 2004.

Mrs. NORTON was employed by various small grocery stores on the Washington square and later by Fern's Bakery, retiring in the late 1960s.

She made quilts, comforters, bread, cinnamon rolls and cookies and grew produce in her garden for her family. She sent homemade cookies and gifts to her grandchildren who lived out of state. She made everyone welcome and there was always room for "one more" at the dinner table.

Survivors include: one son, Virgil NORTON and wife Norma of Colona, Illinois; one daughter, Ruth ZECK of Waterloo; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Dorothy CRILE, Eunice MANN and Norma HESSELTINE; four brothers, Clifford, Harold, Everette and Leonard POHREN; and one granddaughter.
