Phyllis MAYER-BAUM

Phyllis MAYER-BAUM, 86, formerly of Fairfield, died Wednesday Aug. 7, 2013 at Good Samaritan Center in Ottumwa.

Arrangements are pending at Behner Funeral Home & Crematory in Fairfield.

Phyllis MAYER-BAUM

Phyllis MAYER-BAUM age 86, formerly of Fairfield, passed away at Good Samaritan Center, Ottumwa, IA Wednesday, August 7, 2013.

As per her wishes she has been cremated.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 pm, Saturday August 24, 2013 at First Baptist Church, Fairfield, IA with Reverend Brian Gentz officiating.

Family visitation wil be held 1:00 - 2:00 pm prior to the memorial service. Burial of the cremains will be in the family plot at Cottonwood Cemetary (sic), Wayland, IA after the service.

Memorials may be made to Cardinal Community Schools Phyllis MAYER-BAUM Educational Scholarship. Cards and memorials can be sent to Debra CRAMBLIT, P.O. Box 322, Agency, IA 52530.

Phyllis was born at home in rural Washington County on June 9, 1927 to Ernest HINKLE Sr. and Nettie (ALLIMAN) HINKLE.

She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1945 and then began a long teaching career. Phyllis graduated from Parson's (sic) College in 1964 with a degree in Elementary Education. She graduated with a Master's Degree in elementary education from Truman State University in 1971.

Phyllis was married to Lester MAYER November 6, 1969-1982. She married Francis BAUM on June 13, 1988 until his death on January 5, 2013.

Mrs. MAYER-BAUM was active at First Baptist Church and church women in various leadership roles such as President of Area 3 Baptist Women and Regional officer of American Baptist Women.

She also served as Area Liaison for BPW and President of the Fairfield Retired School Personnel for 4 years.

Phyllis began her teaching career in rural Washington and Jefferson counties. She then taught at Cardinal Schools for 26 years where she also served as President of Cardinal Teachers Association. After retirement she continued to teach by working at Tenco at Fairfield teaching Adult Basic Education.

She is survived by her brother, Ernest (Betty) HINKLE Jr. of Birmingham; her children, Steve MAYER of Costa Rica, Craig (Freda) MAYER of Bentonville, Arkansas and Debra (Dirk) CRAMBLIT of Agency, IA, 3 grandchildren: Matt MAYER, Ben MAYER and Lacey MAYER and 3 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded by her husband, parents and siblings: Karl, Richard and Lydia.
