Charles George HERTEL

Charles George HERTEL, 88, of Fairfield, died Sunday, June 30, 2013, at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.

A funeral is at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Behner Funeral Home with the Rev. Nick Adam officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends is 5-7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Memorials and cards can be sent to 4397 E. Jude Lane, Gilbert AZ 85298.

Mr. HERTEL was born May 28, 1925, in Ottumwa, the son of William F. and Erma BISHOP HERTEL. He married Shirley Ann COURTNEY, June 6, 1947, in Fairfield. She died June 2, 2011.

He lived most of his life in Fairfield.

He graduated from Fairfield High School with the class of 1943.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He owned and operated Hertel Auto repair.

He was fire chief of the Fairfield Fire Department.

He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, golfing and baseball.

He was a founder of and coached Little League Baseball in Fairfield.

Through the years, the played in several dance bands, the most recent being the Mello-Tones.

He was a member of VFW No. 2271 and the Lions Club.

In later years, he enjoyed being a part of the Howard Johnson coffee club.

Survivors include two children, William R. HERTEL and spouse Chris, and Janice WILSON and spouse Larry, all of Gilbert, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Shirley, he was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Dorothy DENNY.
