Clive Vinton CLARK Sr., 94, died Saturday, May 26, 2012, at the Sunny Knoll Care Centre in Rockwell City.
The funeral was held May 29, with the Rev. Anita Bane officiating at United Methodist Church in Rockwell City. Burial was at Rosehill Cemetery in Rockwell City. Military graveside rites were provided by Rockwell City Veterans Organization.
Arrangements were handled by Palmer & Swank Funeral Home in Rockwell City.
Mr. CLARK was born Jan. 16, 1918, in Marshalltown, the son of Aubry and Jean SMITH CLARK. He married Mary Elizabeth COWGUILL Aug. 15, 1941, in Packwood. She died in January 2011.
Mr. CLARK graduated from Brighton High School with the Class of 1935. He earned his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1939.
He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, including in New Guinea and Philippine Islands. He was honorably discharged, attaining the rank of lieutenant senior grade.
In 1946, the CLARKs moved to Rockwell City where they purchased Wilson Grocery. They later moved the store to Highway 20 and established Clark's Super Market, which they operated for more than 60 years.
Mr. CLARK was a member of the United Methodist Church.
He served on the Rockwell City school board for 10 years.
Survivors include two sons, Clive V. CLARK Jr. and spouse Julie of Rockwell City, and John CLARK of Lincoln, Neb.; one daughter, Jane COMBELLICK of Chandler, Ariz.; and six grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Earle CLARK.
