Harold Edward TURNER, 89, born on November 22, 1921, in Hamilton, Illinois, died peacefully at La Hacienda in La Posada, Green Valley on June 27, 2011. He was a loving husband and father.
Harold was the son of Edward Jesse and Beulah Mae TURNER. He graduated from Hamilton High School in 1939 and then attended Carthage College until World War II broke out. In April 1942 he enlisted with the US Navy and served in the Pacific until 1946.
He met his wife, Catherine (Kay) SKEETERS, from Watseka, Illinois, in San Diego, California, where he was stationed and she was working for the Navy. Harold and Kay were married on April 5, 1946, in Hamilton, Illinois. After world War II, Harold worked for Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison, Iowa, until the GI Bill allowed him to continue his educational endeavors. He attended Carthage College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1950. Harold continued his education at the University of Illinois where he earned a Masters of Education in 1951. After teaching for 3 years, he furthered his education at George Peabody College (Vanderbilt University), where he completed his Doctorate in Education in Secondary Supervision and Curriculum in 1956.
Harold began his professional career in 1956 as an administrator for Jefferson County Public Schools in Lakewood, Colorado. In 1961 he accepted a position as an associate professor of secondary education at North Texas State College (now the University of North Texas). In 1963 he accepted a position as an Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum Development with the Sacramento Public Schools. In 1966 he accepted a position as Professor of Secondary Education at the University of Missouri at St. Louis (UMSL) where he taught for 20 years.
After Harold's retirement he and Kay traveled for several years and in 1992, they relocated to Green Valley, AZ where he lived until his death. He was an avid golfer, bridge player, gardener, carpenter, and community volunteer.
In 2009 Harold was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Catherine (Kay) TURNER. He is survived by his children, Michele NIMERICK (Jerry) of Austin, Texas, Thomas TURNER (Karen) of Ft. Worth, Texas, Barbara McMAHON (Pat) of Fairfield, Iowa, and Krista LANDGRAF of Chino, California. Additional survivors are nine brandchildren, Catherine WARREN, Melissa HALL and James WARREN; Daniel, Timothy and Molly McMAHON; Amy, Andew and Allison LANDGRAF; and five great-grandchildren Brianna and Ryan HALL, Emily and Colin WARREN-BOWEN, and Joseph PASLY.
A memorial service conducted by Reverend Larry DeLong will be held in the Chapel at Valley Presbyterian Church on July 8, 2011 at 1:30 pm. Harold will be interred with Catherine in the Columbarium at the Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Harold to the Greater Jefferson County Foundation, PO Box 1325, Fairfield, IA 52556.
