Stephen ZAHN, 78, of Ottumwa, formerly of Fairfield, died at 5:15 p.m. Sunday, June 26, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Johnston.

Arrangements are pending at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa.

Stephen 'Steve' ZAHN

Stephen "Steve" ZAHN, 78, of 3209 E. 9th St., Des Moines, formerly of Fairfield and Ottumwa, died at 5:15 p.m. June 26, 2011 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

He was born August 3, 1932 in St. Louis, MO the son of Leslie and Pearl BOWEN ZAHN. He married JoAnn CANAAN on August 3, 1958. She preceded him in death February 15, 2010.

A graduate of Creston High School, he had served in the U.S. Navy.

He and his wife lived in Fairfield for many years where they owned The Shoe Den and Northside Bootery. They owned and operated motels in several locations, retiring in Ottumwa in 1992.

Steve attended Faith Baptist Church in Ottumwa and was a member of the Fairfield Kiwanis. He enjoyed camping with his family, fishing with his grandsons and visiting with friends.

Surviving are three daughters, Pam (Kathy) of Minnesota, Lori of Marion and Lisa of Des Moines; three grandsons, Steven TAYLOR of Iowa City, Scott TAYLOR of Ottumwa and Allen BENNETT of St. Paul,MN;a great-granddaughter, Angel BENNETT; and a host of brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Jimmy and a son-in-law, Randy TAYLOR.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa with Pastor Phil Griffith officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery (sic - in Ottumwa, IA).

Visitation begins at 11 a.m Wednesday with the family present from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to Mercy Hospice, 5820 Winwood Dr., Johnston, IA 50131.
