WELLS, Darlene Vivian -- Darlene Vivian WELLS, 74, of Batavia, died Monday, March 23, 2009, at Washington Care Center in Washintgon, Iowa.

A service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield, with the Rev Thomas Shipley officiating. Interment will be in Batavia Cemetery.

Family visitation will be from 9-10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Batavia Library or Batavia Cemetery. Cards and memorials may be sent to PO Box 119, Batavia 52533.

Mrs. WELLS was born Jan. 30, 1935, in Fairfield, the daughter of Ernest and Merle Marie MARTIN HARTLEY. She married Donald WELLS Feb. 15, 1963, in Fairfield. He died Oct. 8, 2008.

Mrs. WELLS was raised in the Glasgow area. She worked from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s at Universal Producing Company. She and her husband made their home in Batavia, moving to their permanent residence in 1964. She was the librarian at Batavia Public Library from the early 1970s until 1976, but she continued to serve as a backup throughout the 1980s. She also worked as a cook at Cardinal Elementary School in Batavia from 1976 until it closed in 1984.

Mrs. WELLS and her husband enjoyed fishing, gardening, traveling together and creating crafts, with her crocheting and sewing when she wasn't helping her husband paint.

Survivors include two sons, John WELLS and David WELLS and wife Jodi, all of Batavia; one granddaughter; and one sister, Irene FILSON of Birmingham.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
