WELLS, Donald Franklin -- Donald Franklin WELLS, 77, of Batavia, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

A service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield, with the Rev. Thomas Shipley officiating. Interment will be in Batavia Cemetery.

Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Batavia Fire Department. Cards and memorials may be sent to PO Box 119, Batavia 52533.

Mr. WELLS was born April 20, 1931, in Ottumwa, the son of Frank and Maude BURKE WELLS. He married Darlene HARTLEY Feb. 15, 1963, in Fairfield.

Mr. WELLS spent his early years in Ottumwa and moved to Batavia in 1963. He was employed in the maintenance department at John Morrell Co. for 24 years, and he was a custodian with the Cardinal Community School District for 20 years.

He was a member of Batavia United Methodist Church. He was fire chief of the Batavia Fire Department for more than 30 years.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, John WELLS and David WELLS and wife Jodi, all of Batavia; one granddaughter; two sisters, Naomi PONCY of Ottumwa and Jane BRIGGS of Lockridge; and one brother, Carl McCRORY of Laguna Woods, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Dallas McCRORY and DeLoise McCRORY as an infant.
