RIPLEY, Jackson County, 1880

Jacob RIPLEY and wife, Lizzie, appear in the 1880 Census as living in Monmouth Township, Jackson County. I want to know if Monmouth was a name of a town or a region. Was it mainly a farming area? Jacob RIPLEY was listed as a sawyer at a mill. Is there any record of this sawmill. His wife's name was probably Lizzie M ELLIS, but she was suppose to be half Oglala Sioux, but I wonder about her parentage. I wonder if she was adopted by Ellis family. Are there any historical records of Jackson County which give info on Jacob or Lizzie RIPLEY?
