Two Young Men Struck by a Train.
Early Tuesday morning as Matt Kelly and Neil Conry were driving home from a dance at Alta Vista they were struck by a Chicago Great Western passenger train, No. 1. The team was instantly killed and the forward part of the buggy reduced to kindling wood. Both young men were frightfully injured. Kelly’s both legs are broken, one being fractured in several places, his right arm and collar bone is broken and he is otherwise cut and bruised.
He has been conscious most of the time since the accident and able to talk. Conry received the most severe injuries. Besides his both legs and one arm being broken his skull is crushed and he is injured internally. He has been unconscious since the accident.
Dr. Hastings was immediately summoned and as soon as he arrived and saw the condition of the young men he advised sending for a priest, Father Joungeman was awakened and was soon on the scene. Kelly was taken to New Hampton on train No. 6. He was taken to the home of his sister Mrs. John Wandro, where his injuries are being attended to by Drs. Hastings, Babcock and Gardner.
Matt Kelly is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Kelly of Jacksonville twp. Neil Conry is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Conry living south of Lourdes. They are both about twenty years of age and fine young men.
Later: Neil Conry died Thursday evening at 11 o'clock. We understand that at no time since the accident was he sufficiently conscious to recognize those about him, or to realize what had happened. This is indeed a tragic ending to a promising young life. Neil was a bright, industrious boy, kind hearten, and of more than ordinary intellectual ability.
We join with all in expressing profound sorrow and extending sympathy to the bereaved parents and relatives at this time.—Elma New Era.
