from Elma library collection assembled by Marian (Marr) McGeeELMA — Merle J. Wacha, 64, of Elma, died Tuesday (June 6, 2000) of cancer at his home, surrounded by family and long time friend, the Rev. Peter Bodensteiner.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Lourdes, with the Rev. Roger R. Rethamel and the Rev. Peter Bodensteiner presiding. Interment will be in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, with military graveside services conducted by the John Frahm American Legion Post of Elma.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Conway Funeral Home in Elma, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. scripture service. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.
Merle Joseph Wacha was born May 18,1936, in New Hampton, the son of William J. and Mildred (Merrick) Wacha. He was a 1954 graduate of Immaculate Conception High School in Elma and entered the U.S. Army in 1956.
Merle married Elaine Smith on Oct. 7,1961, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. They farmed west of Lourdes. He enjoyed watching golfing, the Hawkeyes, visiting and also spending time with family and friends.
Merle is survived by his wife, Elaine; three sons, Thomas (Karen), of Texarkana, Texas, Daniel (Mami), of Cedar Rapids, and Kenneth, of Salina, Kan.; four daughters, Peggy Rogers, of Cedar Rapids, Karen (Mike) Karsjens, of Cedar Rapids, Nancy (Steve) Mariner, of Mason City and Kathy Wacha, of Cedar Rapids; 16 grandchildren; two sisters, Marian (Tom) Gebel, of New Hampton and Marge Haugen, of Clear Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother-in-law, Clarence Haugen.
