LOURDES — Gervase O'Brien, 77, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000 at his home.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Very Rev. Roger R. Rethamel presided. Conway Funeral Home, Cresco was in charge of arrangements. Gifts were carried by Megan and Holly O'Brien and Maureen Puffer. The lector was Rick Jensen.

Burial was in the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Cemetery. Casket bearers were the sons-in-law: William Puffer, Al deNeui, Rick Jensen, Damon Gragert, Jeremy Cornwell and Darin Ferrie.

Gervase Charles O'Brien was born in Howard County on Jan. 3, 1923, the son of Charles and Pearl (Sweeney) O'Brien. He attended rural school and the school at Lourdes. On Oct. 28, 1953, he was united in marriage to Kathryn Harris at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. To this union ten children were born. Gervase lived on the farm all his life. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed fishing and watching ball games, especially the Cubs and the Bears.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn; three sons, Richard and his wife Cheri, Russell and his wife Kimberly and Thomas and his wife Beverly, all of Cresco; six daughters, Susan and her husband William Puffer, Spring Valley, MN, Terri and her husband Al deNeui, Waverly, Donna and her husband Rick Jensen, Guttenberg, Sherry and her husband Damon Gragert, Lime Springs, Sandra and her husband Jeremy Cornwell, Osage and Kathy and her husband, Darin Ferrie, Cresco; one daughter-in-law, Linda O'Brien, Cresco; 24 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Colletta Wilson, Cresco and Bernadette Fogarty, Cedar Rapids.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a son, David in 1997 and a sister, Marcella Moser.
