ELMA -- Alfred P. Kohles, 80, died Friday, May 5 at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco of natural causes.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 9 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Lourdes with Rev. Roger R. Rethamel officiating. Organist was Theresa Burke. Lector was Jim Marik. Mass servers were Fay Freidhof and Francis Nibaur and gift bearers were Amanda and Heather Hageman.

Burial was in the church cemetery with Michael Ries, Jeff Biwer, Joshua Tweeten, Jacob Tweeten, Tyler Tweeten and Michelle Biwer serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers were Lori Stewart, Shelley Howe, Shereen McKenna, John Kohles and Kimberly Davis. Graveside military rites were provided by the American Legion John Frahm Post of Elma.

Visitation was from 4 to 8 .m. on Monday, May 8 at Conway Funeral Home in Elma where there was a 4:30 p.m. Rosary and a 7 p.m. Scripture Service. Visitation was also an hour prior to services at the church.

Alfred Peter Kohles was born Dec. 17, 1919 at Earling, the son of George and Mary (Emig) Kohles. At age two his family moved to Howard County. He made his First Communion and was confirmed at Chester. He entered the armed forces in 1941 and served three years in the Military Police during World War II. He married Beatrice Havlik on May 29, 1944 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. After their marriage the couple farmed in .the Lourdes area and after his retirement they moved to Elma. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and the American Legion Post in Elma.

Survivors include his wife, Beatrice, Elma; four daughters, Donna (A1) Biwer, Elma, Mary Lou (Gary) Ries, Ionia, Linda (Bill) Tweeten, Joice and Julie (Dean) Hageman, Ossian; one son, Ronald (Shannon) Kohles, Belmond; 13 grandchildren; ten greatgrandchildren; five sisters, Marcella Wyatt, Stella Wyatt and Rita Thompson, all of Riceville, Anna Jean Sullivan, Cedar Rapids and Helen Sullivan, Cresco; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were a son, Gary; a daughter, Betty Jo; his parents; two grandchildren, Peter and Anastacia; one brother, Urban Kohles; three sisters, Lenora Kohles, Rose Kohles and Mary Whitinger.
