Thank you so much, Pat! This is the first solid lead I've had on this family for years. I'm sure this is the family I'm looking for. I know where the Hamptons were in 1880....they were in Jefferson Co. IA. Fred (who is called Edward on 1880 census) was last mentioned as a one-yr. old. His father, Levi, died a couple yrs. later and I've found no further reference to him or his mother, Clara. I still don't know what happened to her, but at least I have a bit more info to work with.

I would like to know if there's any record of a divorce or separation of some kind with Fred and Mary Hampton as I don't see them on later censuses. I'm not certain Fred actually went into the Army...only that he registered for the draft in WW I.
