On page 442 of the "1878 History of Fayette County, Iowa", a J. P. Monnahan is listed as having enlisted in the Ninth Cavalry, Company C on October 1, 1863. This unit served in "Arkansas, were it remained performing heavy scouting, guard and garrison duties until the end of the war. This regiment was mustered out February 3, 1866."

On page 641 (Illyria Township directory & biographies section), a M. Monnahan, farmer, section 3, P. O. Illyria.
