Thanks, Phil. I did find the website for the 17th Missouri, and Gustav was indeed a part of it, from 1861-Dec. 1862. However, I did not get an answer to my question of why he joined the Missouri Inf. instead of a unit in Iowa; I speculate that, since the 17th was a "Turner" regiment, there were many Germans in it, and he felt at home. I am also wondering why he got out after little more than a year, as he did not appear to be injured.
