I just found your posting and hope that you have found the 17th Missouri website . The 17th Missouri also known as the Western Turner Rifles was composed of German immigrants who were recruited nationwide to be part of an all German Regiment. The web site contains a listing of the men who served in the regiment. Possibly you will find Gustav listed. If nor please send me an email and I will check my sources.
