In Response To: Re: Catholic orphanage in Dubuque ? (Jean Grimes)

Hello Jean,

Thanks for your note. I just returned from vacation to read it. The time period I am looking for is around 1889 - 1892 or so. I should have included that info in my query. I am researching an orphan train rider and have a hunch that she may have passed through Dubuque or possibly spent time in a Catholic orphanage there. (I do know about the various orphan train websites and Orphan Train Heritage Society of America).

My rider is thought to have traveled from New York to Stacyville, Iowa. I have been researching this for several years and am at a brick wall in locating an orphanage record.

I have been thinking that perhaps my rider could actually have been sent from an Iowa orphanage along the train route and placed in Stacyville. Just a theory, but I have found a number of matching surnames of Magerus/Majerus in Iowa.

I do appreciate all of you info and will see if there are any tips I can glean from it. Thanks again.
