In Response To: Re: Paternal Father & Family (Russell T. Swire (Lomax))

Russell, I did a little sleuthing for you since you don't know a lot about your paternal heritage.

What a patriotic line of Lomax ancestors I uncovered for you! Your father was in the US Navy during the Korean War; Your uncle in World War II, Korea and Vietnam; Your first cousin, a recipient of the the Bronze Star; Your grandfather was in World War I; Your other grandfathers on your direct line served in the Mexican War, the Civil War, the War of 1812 and the Revolutionary War. The details follow.

Your father was born Estel Delvin Lomax in Adams County, Illinois on October 22, 1933. His parents were Thomas Leonard Lomax and Myrtle Ellen (Smith) Lomax. His father died November 28, 1936 in Quincy, Illinois when your father was just three years old. His mother eventually moved to Florida and died there in January 1958, a little over three months after your father was killed in a motorcycle accident in Burlington. The accident with a car at a Burlington intersection was on Wednesday, September 26, 1957 and he died in the hospital on Thursday, September 27 according to an account in the newspaper. Prugh Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

"Estel Delvin Lomax, 21, Burlington, died Thursday of injuries suffered when the motorcycle he was driving was in collision with an automobile at an intersection here Wednesday. Police identified the driver of the car as Larry Dale Osborn, of near Burlington."

Estel's brother, Thomas Byron Lomax [November 9, 1918 - September 14, 1983] was living in Burlington at the time. He also moved to Florida and died there in Escambia County as well as Estel's sister, Margaret Lomax Stevenson McMullen [April 15, 1920 - November 4, 2008] who died in Ocala, Florida. Several of Margaret's children were born in Burlington, Iowa and moved to Florida as a family in 1952.

Estel Delvin and Thomas Byron were both in the service.

Your father enlisted on July 10, 1951 and was discharged on August 20, 1954, just a few days before you were born. His service # was 324-17-12 and he was in the United States Navy.

His brother was career Air Force, enlisting on March 20, 1944 and released 25 years later on January 28, 1969, having served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Here is a link to Thomas Byron's gravestone in Chipley, Florida:

Estel Delvin's sister Margaret's obituary from the Tampa Bay Times on November 12, 2008:

"Margaret (Lomax) Stevenson McMullen, 88, passed away on Nov. 4, 2008, at The Legacy Hospice House in Ocala, after a brief illness. She was born in Marblehead, IL, on April 15, 1920 to Thomas Leonard Lomax and Myrtle Ellen (Smith). Her parents and brothers, Byron Lomax and Delvin Lomax, preceded her in death. She is survived by three sons, Gary Stevenson (Cherry), Dunnellon, Tommy Stevenson (Linda), Citrus Springs, and Carl R. McMullen Jr. (Linda), Columbus, GA; and daughter, Mary Sue Stevenson Starling (husband Ed), of Dunnellon; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She loved Florida's beaches and sunshine, and had a special place in her heart for animals. Cremation by Roberts Funeral Home in Dunnellon, and the family will have a private memorial service. Memorial donations be made to Hospice, whose tender, loving care of our mother will always be remembered and appreciated."

Your first cousin's obituary (Margaret's son) -- From his obituary information (Citrus County Chronicle - October 16, 2009,) it looks like he too was a military man and a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal:
