DYERSVILLE, Iowa - James E. Hittenmiller, 76, of Venice, Fla., and Delhi, formerly of Dyersville, died Sunday, April 18, 2004, at Bon Secours-Venice Hospital, Venice.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with Monsignor Ed Petty officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 137. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4 p.m., and an American Legion service at 7 p.m.

He was born on Dec. 6, 1927, in Dyersville, son of Albert "Flick" and Marie (Berndsen) Hittenmiller. He married Dorothy Bierl on June 14, 1949, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville.

He graduated from Xavier High School with the class of 1946.

He was the co-owner of the Gambles store in downtown Dyersville. Later, he owned and operated Furniture-Land in the same location for many years. His sons, Tom and Scott, operate the business today.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; three sons, Tom (Nancy) and Scott (Deb), both of Dyersville, and Robert "Budda" (Rose Putz), of Delhi; a daughter, Karen (Bob) Faber, of Ankeny; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a brother, Myron (Betty), of Dyersville; and a sister, Mary Eileen (John) Murphy, of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert.
