In Response To: Redfield Obitusries Needed (Richard Tomlinson)

Concerning the request of Richard Tomlinson for access to Obituaries for Anna M. Stapes d 15 Aug 1950 and William A. Stapes d 1953, buried Redfield, IA, East Linn Cemetery;--- also any information or an obituary for Charles R. Tomlinson d. 30 Oct 1940, buried East Linn Cemetery.
----- In the earlier part of the 1900's, the town of Redfield, IA was served by a newspaper, "The Redfield Review". At some point in the middle of the century, this paper was merged with a paper published at Dexter, IA known as the "The Dexter Sentinel". As I remember, the merged paper was known as the "Review Sentinel", which I believed ceased publication some years ago. There are bound copies of the "Redfield Review" and the "Review Sentinel" kept in a store room of the Redfield Public Library. Also, there are shoe-boxes of clipped obituaries, beginning, as I remember, about 1940. This library is located about ten miles from where I live, but I happen to be quite occupied at the moment and will not have time to visit this library for a few weeks.

----- Last evening I had the opportunity to attend a Dallas County Genealogical Society meeting at the Dallas Center, Iowa library and consulted a copy of the "Redfield, Iowa Quasicentennial, 1860-1985" publication issued about 1985. This includes the following information:

Mr. and Mrs. William A. Stapes

William A. Stapes was born near Redfield on Jan. 19, 1866, the son of Joseph and Lydia Stapes. On Feb. 28,1889 he was married to Ida May Stout. She was born near Hopkins, Mo. in 1976 (evidently 1876) the daughter of Jacob and Jenny Stout.
For several years after their marriage he was a farmer. Will (as he was known) was a blacksmith in Redfield for 25 years, starting his shop in 1905. During the first few years of blacksmithing he was in parnership with his brothr-in-law James P. Stout. About 1930 Will retired from his shop in the business district, but soon afterwards he started another small shop behind his home. He remained in Redfield until his death in 1953 at the age of 87.

William and Ida Stapes were the parents of three childre: Lucy (1890-1979) married Jay Jones in 1907; Lonnie 1891-1959) married Hazel Hawkins in 1914; and Marvin W. (18 97-1963) married Frances Bharnes in 1936.

Ida Stapes died in 1910 at the age of 34. In 1912 Will was married to Annie Hawkins who died in 1950.

Direct descendants of William and Ida living in Redfield today include one grandson Lloyd A. Stapes, and three great-grandsons: Bob Jones, Barry Jones and Troy Jones.
___________

----- Not often visiting Redfield, I have not been aquainted with any of the people mentioned in this article. However, in my high-school days I was acquainted with Margaret (Stanley)(Barnett) Jones and the Stanley and Barnett families. Her children included: Kim Jones of Dexter,IA, Barry Jones of Maryville, MO, and Troy Jones of Redfield, IA. Margaret died February 28,2003, and I attended her funeral at the Bear Creek Friends Church in rural Union Twp., Dallas County, IA.

---- The same Refield Quasicentennial publication includes an account of Joseph and Lydia Stapes, parents of William A. Stapes. Lydia (Thornburg) Stapes was born in Randolph County, Indiana in 1849, the daughter of John L. Thornburg and Harriet (Diggs) Thornburg.----The Thornburg and Diggs families were of Quaker background. I have Thornburg (or Thornbrough) ancestors and know something of the family history.

---- Perhaps, at a later date, I may be able to locate some of the obituaries which are requested. At the moment, I know little concerning the Hawkins family.
