This is my second posting relating to the Tomlinson - Stapes query. Since my last posting, I have received an e-mail from Richard Tomlinson dated 04/03/2003.

On 04/04/2003 I was able to visit the Redfield, IA public library and locate an obituary from the "Redfield Review" dated August 24, 1950 for Mrs. Annie Stapes, also an obituary from the same paper dated October 29, 1953 for William Alva Stapes. I was also able to find an abstract of an obituary from the "Redfield Review", dated Nov. 7, 1940 for Charley R. Tomlinson.

The obituary for Mrs. Annie Stapes indicates that she was born May 2, 1870 at Chanute, Kansas and passed away Aug. 15, 1950. Her maiden name was Annie M. Tomlinson. On February 3, 1892 she was married to Frank O. Hawkins. Mr. Hawkins died in 1912. To them were born five children: Ollie who died in infancy, Edith Pitts of Redfield, Minnie Rhoads of Des Moines, Hazel Stapes of Redfield and Mary Wright of Bayard. Among the survivors are ten grandhcildren and ten great-grand-children. Her father, mother, four brothers, and two sisters preceded her in death.---[There were probably two brothers still living.]

The obituary of William Alva Stapes lists his three children by his first marriage and also mentions that there were 4 step daughters.

Neither the obituary of Mrs. Annie Stapes nor of William Alva Stapes mentions any children of the marriage of William and Annie. The Anna M., dau., age 9, listed in the 1920 census may have actually been a grandaughter.

The abstract of the obituary of Charley R. Tomlinson is as follows:

Charley R. Tomlinson

B. July 3, 1867, Jacksonville, Ill.

D. Oct. 30, 1940, Spirit Lake, Iowa

Parents: _______ _________

Siblings:

Annie Stapes, Redfield

Will

Lee

John of Chanute, Kansas

Leonard of Sarcoxie, MO

Wilbert, Peoria, Ill.

(d. 1 sister)

[There is no mention of Charlie Tomlinson being married or of his having any childre.]

I will send complete copies of the obituaries of Mrs. Annie Stapes and of William Alva Stapes to Richard Tomlinson by "snail mail".
