Elkader Register, Fri., 16 Mar. 1883. Elkport Locals column.

Mr. A. Snack* died on the 9th inst., of heart disease. Deceased was about 50 years of age, and had been a resident of the county for many years. He leaves a wife and five children, who will have the sympathy of all in their sad bereavement. The funeral occurred on Sunday, his remains being buried in the cemetery at this place. Rev. Dornseif preached the funeral sermon.

This death notice almost certainly is for Detlef Schnack (9/11/1833 - 3/9/1883), a Civil War soldier of Co E, 26th IA Infantry. He and his wife Catherine are enumerated on the 1880 US census, Volga. On the 1885 Iowa State census Catherine is shown to be a widow. Her obituary (link below) states that her husband died in 1890, which, if the above is correct, is an error.
