John Frederick Arthur Schlake, sixth child of Henry Schlake and wife, was born Jan. 21, 1890, in Garnavillo twp., and died June 21, 1910, at the age of 20 years, and five months. His boyhood days were spent at home. When six years of age he entered the public school and continued his studies until he was fifteen years old. After this he attended Confirmation school and was confirmed by Rev. Braun, pastor of St. Paul's church, on April 23rd, 1905.
On last Tuesday he, in company with friends, went on a fishing excursion to the Mississippi river. Shortly before their departure for home, the boys went bathing, and while in about five feet of water Arthur was seen to throw up his hands and fall backwards into the water. This was the last seen of him, his death being caused by a heart stroke. After about two hours of diligent searching the body was recovered and at midnight the remains were brought to his home by Undertaker Luehsen and others, who had gone with him to assist in the recovery of the body. His parents were attending a golden wedding celebration in Guttenberg and were seated at the supper table when the sorrowful news reached them.
Arthur was an industrious young man and an honor to his parents. Left to mourn his early demise are his sorrowing parents, sister Ida and family, of Manly, Anna and John, of Jefferson twp., Albert, Alma, Herman, Ruth, LeRoy, Nettie and Victor, at home, besides two uncles, Fred and John Wilker, and an aunt, Mrs. Chas. Schmidt.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Braun on Friday afternoon with interment in the new cemetery. The Garnavillo Turn Verein, of which he was a member, escorted the funeral cortege to the church and from there to the final resting place of the deceased. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful.
