Madison, WI - Elery Dietrich Henry Nuehring, age 92, passed away Saturday, October 4 at Oak Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a prolonged illness. Elery, the son of Edward and Hulda Busacker Nuehring, was born September 3, 1911 in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, near Postville, Iowa. The eldest of six children, Elery grew up on a farm, attending the Grand Meadow Township School No. 4 through the eighth grade. He left the family farm to work for the County Highway Department in 1929 and trained as a heavy equipment mechanic. On February 9, 1933 he married Lora Eberling and lived in Luana, Monona, and Mason City, Iowa before moving the family to Madison, Wisconsin in 1947. Elery worked for Nagel Hart, then became a service advisor first at Bruns Garage and later for the Tom McGann VW dealership. In later years, he volunteered his time at his son's fire safety business in Madison. Elery was proud of his German heritage and a strong advocate of air cooled engine technology. He was long term member of Corsa, the Madison area Corvair club. Elery is survived by his son, Eugene of Madison, who owns and operates Madison Recharging Service, and his son, Ronald, a clinical psychologist who resides with his wife, Elane, a university professor, in Miami, Florida. He is also survived by a brother, Eldred and his wife Darlene; a sister, Ellen Thoma; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Nuehring, all of Postville; and a brother-in-law, Robert DeMarr of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Elery was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lora, to whom he was married for over 54 years, brothers Elliot Neuhring and Alden (Jim) Nuehring, sister Eileen DeMarr, and sister-in-law, Dorothea Neuhring. Funeral services were held at 2:30 PM Wednesday, October 8, 2003 at Luther Memorial Church, 1021 University Avenue, where Elery was a member for over 56 years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Elery's name to Luther Memorial Church. The family would like to offer special thanks to the personnel of Oak Park for the quality of care and kindness extended to Elery.
