Verni Henry Engle, son of Fred and Wilhelimina Dahms Engle, was born in Clayton county near Postville on February 22, 1896, and passed away at the Community Memorial Hospital, Postville, Sunday morning, February 28, at the age of 69 years after suffering from two strokes.
At an early age he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a member of the West Clermont Lutheran Church. He was educated in the Postville Public Schools and served in the U.S. armed forces in World War I. He has been a member of the Sheehan-Olson American Legion Post, Clermont, for over 40 years.
On December 9, 1919 he was married to Lucy Wersinger. Two children joined this union, Vernice (Mrs. Reuben Svendsen) of Lawler, and Joycelyn (Mrs. John Bakewell) of Clermont.
He farmed in the Postville and Castalia communities for 27 years and for the past 20 years made his home in Clermont. His wife passed away seven years ago.
He is survived by his two daughters; eight grandchildren; one half-brother, Arnold Backhaus of Postville; three half-sisters, Florence (Mrs. Henry Christofferson) of Monona, Viola, (Mrs. Louis Miller) of Luana, and Marie (Mrs. Elmer Schutte) of Postville; one step-sister, Amanda (Mrs. Alvin Johanningmeier) of Monona; and one uncle, Ed Dahms, of Postville. His wife, his parents and one step-brother, Albert Backhaus, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held from the West Clermont Lutheran Church at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon, March 3, with Rev. Roger Peterson officiating. Graveside services were conducted by Rev. Peterson with the Sheehan-Olson Legion in charge of military rites.
