Bernell J. Whittle, 84, of Elkader, died suddenly on November 10, 2009, at his home.
Mass of Christian burial was held 10 a.m., Saturday, November 14, 2009, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Elkader with The Rev. Paula R. Peters officiating.
Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Elkader.
The casket bearers were David Whittle, Dan Peck, David Reimer, Tom Kenke, Christopher Whittle, and Chad Whittle.
Visitation was held 4-7 p.m. Friday, November 13, and after 9 a.m. Saturday at church.
He was born September 9, 1925 near Elkader to Clement and Elsie (Kopp) Whittle. He attended Elkader High School and served the military during the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage to Bernice Dutka on November 7, 1953, at St. Joseph's Church in Elkader. Three children were born to this union. He farmed his entire life in the area. He enjoyed driving tractor, mowing lawn, fishing and his grandchildren. He loved the Chicago Cubs, and a highlight was attending a game at Wrigley Field in 2008, with his granddaughters and his brother Malcolm. Bernell's dog, Tugger, was very special to him. Survivors include his wife, Bernice Whittle of Elkader; his son, Stanley (Cheryl) Whittle of Elkader; his daughter, Beverly Whittle and her special friend Joseph Doyle of Cedar Falls; four grandchildren, Chad, Christopher, Amanda and Stacey; three brothers, Earl (Ruth) Whittle of Prairie du Chien, WI, Malcolm (JoAnn) Whittle of Elkader and Norbert (Dorothy) Whittle of Glendale, WI; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Dwayne on October 8, 2003 and a sister, Edith Peck.
