Fred John Miller

Rites Held For Fred J. Miller

Fred J. Miller, the son of Frederick Miller and his wife Anna Walther Miller, was born at Elkader, on July 22, 1891. He was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center, in 1891 and was confirmed in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Postville on April 16, 1905. He died on July 12, 1961 at the age of 69 years, 11 months and 20 days.

He was married to Huldah Harnack on September 18, 1917. Fred Miller started in the oil business in Postville on October 14, 1916. The firm operated as a partnership of Miller and Huebner, who were agents for the Hawkeye Oil Company. The firm also included the operation of a dray line.

After a nine month tour of duty with the armed forces in World War I, Mr. Miller returned to Postville and became a partner with George Hein. In July 1933, Mr. Miller dissolved partnership with George Hein and retained the station, bulk plant and garage. He retired from active business on April 1, 1954, when George Huebner purchased and took over the operation of the business.

In addition to his business activities, Mr. Miller was active in the community in many other ways. He served as mayor of Postville for several years, was a member of the town council, Master of the Masonic Lodge, secretary of the I. O. O. F., and was Noble Grand. He was also a director of the Citizen's State Bank, a trustee of the Postville Hospital Board, a member of the Commercial Club and Kiwanis Club, and a charter member of the American Legion, serving as adjutant for a period.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather, two half-brothers and one half-sister.

He is survived by his wife; one brother, William Miller of Elgin;two half-brothers, Rudy Huebner and Henry Huebner of Postville; one step sister, Anna, Mrs. John Gruel of Harvard, Illinois; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, 2:00 p.m., at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church with the Rev. C. E. Witt in charge. Burial was in Postville cemetery with a military service conducted by Arthur F. Brandt Post, American Legion.
