Elton "Punk" Thornton, 74, of McGregor, Iowa died Friday, Feb. 16, 2007 at Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien, Wis., following a long illness.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007 at First Lutheran Church, rural McGregor. Burial with military honors will be in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in McGregor.
Friends could call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Thornberg-Hanson Funeral Home in McGregor and one hour prior to services at the church.
Elton was born Nov. 2, 1932 to Ross and Mary (Stahl) Thornton in Iowa city, Iowa. He attended school in Marquette and served in the Navy during the Korean War.
He married Shirley Wagner on March 26, 1955, in Waukon, Iowa. They lived in Cedar Rapids for five years, before moving to McGregor in 1960. He worked for Bituma Stor until 1980. He then drove escort until his health failed.
Punk is survived by his wife, Shirley; four sons: Randy (Sandy) Thornton of Marquette, Iowa; Gary (Vicki) Thornton of Florida; Terry (Peggy)Thornton and Robert (friend Hope) both of McGregor; two daughters: Barbara Burr and Deb (Mike) Trautsch, both of Prairie du Chien, Wis.; 12 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; one brother, George Thornton of McGregor; three sisters: Amy Lovell of Elmwood, Wis.; Pearl Wittenberg of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Anne Franke of Fishers, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold, Milo, Leroy and John and one sister Delores.
