Dorothy Anna Emilia Berns, 84, Monona, Iowa, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital, Prairie du Chien, WI, following a long illness.

A Mass of Christian Burial was said at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, 2007 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Monona. The Rev. Richard Gaul officiated.

Burial was in St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, Monona.

She was born April 10, 1922, in rural Clayton County to Herman R. and Margaret A. (Harter) Mueller. She married Hubert Berns on Nov. 9, 1948, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Garnavillo, and two children were born to this union. Dorothy was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting and knitting. She loved visiting family, friends, and playing cards. Scrapbooking was a favorite pastime. Dorothy was a news correspondent for The Billboard and The Clayton County Register for many years.

Survivors include two children, Ronald (Rebecca) Berns, Monona; and Doris (Jim Snyder) Berns, Albright, W.Va.; five grandchildren: Sara, John and Mark Berns and Nathan and Amelia Snyder; two sisters, Margaret Schlueter, Garnavillo, Florentine Bries, Luxemburg; and three brothers, Hermie (Theresa) Mueller, Guttenberg; Henry (Rosemary) Mueller, and Harold (Lois) Mueller, Garnavillo.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Friends could call on Sunday, January 28, 2007, at the Leonard Funeral Home, Monona, where there was a scripture service at 6 pm. Friends could also call one hour before mass time at the church on Monday.

Music for the funeral was provided by Jenny Feudner.
