Elkader Register, Thur. 2 Aug. 1906. Local News column.

T. C. Ely, a well known former resident of Elkader, died at Elma, Iowa, and was buried there on the 20th ult. Thad., as he was called, was a veteran of Co. B, 1st Iowa Cav., and was about 77 years old at his death. We believe he is survived by his wife, one son and two daughters, Mrs. Leo Wachtel and Mrs. G. A. Fairfield. Mr. and Mrs. Ely left Elkader in 18__ (looks like 1898). Mr. Ely was a genial, wholesonled man, ever inclined to see the bright side of life. We regret his departure.

Elkader Register, Thur., 16 Aug. 1906. From the Alta Vista Vidette, undated.

Thaddeus Ely was born at Jamestown, Oneida Co., N.Y., Sept. _ (single digit, blurred), 1829. On June 26th, 1850, he was married at Murray, Ontario, Canada, to Mary Simmons.

He followed the occupation of mason and in the year 1855 moved to Akron, Ohio, and about a year later to Dane Co., Wis. In 1863 he came to Clayton Co., Iowa, living at Strawberry Point and Elkader during a period of thirty years. In the Spring of 1893 he located in Elma where he made his home until his death.

On Feb. 29, 1861, Mr. Ely enlisted as a volunteer in Co. B, First Regt., Iowa Cavalry taking part in the siege of Vicksburg, the operations about Little Rock, Ark., and in Gen. Bank's Red River expedition. In the Texas campaign he served as Aid de Camp to Gen. Custer and was mustered out of the service at Austin, Texas, at the close of the war.

During these strenuous campaigns he received wounds and contracted disabilities which caused him suffering ever afterward but nothing could induce him to apply for a pension as long as he was able to earn a living at his occupation of mason and until he had passed the age of sixty.

He was a faithful member of the Grand Army of the Republic and served as Commander of the Posts both at Elkader and at Elma. On July 5th, 1892, he was commissioned Aid de Camp to Gen. J. J. Stedman, Commander of the Dept. of Iowa, with rank of Colonel.

Strictest honor and integrity and unswerving fidelity to duty were cardinal virtues of his character. His disposition was congenial and sunny and he was ever regarded as a kind and considerate neighbor and warm friend.

His Death was caused by apoplexy on Thursday, July 19th, 1906. He is survived by the wife, who for 56 years has shared his joys and sorrows; by two sons, Wilbur A, of Rock Rapids, Ia., and G. N., of Boulder, Colo.; three daughters, Mrs. Sarah C. Minkler, of Edgewood, Ia., Mrs. Grace A. Fairfield, of Worthington, Minn., and Mrs. Florence Irene Wachtel, of Elma. Also by nineteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alonson Ely, of Elgin, Iowa, and Ashley Ely, of Rock Rapids, Iowa; and by two sisters, Mrs. Juliet Hammond, of Michigan, and Mrs. Lettie Kinsley, of Wisconsin.

Funeral services were conducted from the home on Sunday, July 22, by Rev. Gallaher of the M.E. church.- Alta Vista Vidette.
