Funeral services for Dorothy Maud Mitchell, age 87, of Monona, Iowa, were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday April 6 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Waukon, Iowa. Rev. Steve Campbell officiated. Burial was in the Monona City Cemetery with Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Everett Baker, Gary Sweeney, Steve Leiran, Matt Mitchell, Lowell Monroe, Cliff Moore, Scott Welty, and Dennis Lodor. Honorary bearers were Norbert Palmer, George Ashbacher, Virgil Thorstenson, Otto Thorstenson, Wesley Lawson, Ralph Campbell, Gordon Campbell, Doug Kubitz, and Eugene Thias.
Dorothy Maud was born January 26, 1912 to Joseph and Ethel (Snell) Blietz on their rural Monona, Iowa farm. She attended Walnut Grove rural elementary and Monona High School. On October 28, 1931 Dorothy married Dennis Mitchell at the Methodist parsonage in Lansing, Iowa. She worked the farm while Dennis had other jobs in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Dorothy also worked as a baker at Reva's and Lee's Restaurant and Quandahl's Cafe in Waukon, Iowa. She was a longtime member of the Volney Methodist Church and its Ladies Aid. After the Volney church closed, she became active in St. Paul's Methodist Church and its Women's circles in Waukon, Iowa. Dorothy was also a member of the Big Foot Study Club and a birthday club.
Dorothy died Friday, April 2, 1999 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Dennis, and a brother Charles "Charlie" Blietz.
She is survived by her 4 daughters, Norma Jean (George) Sweeney of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Marlys (Willard) Leiran of Waterville, Iowa, retired Lt. Col Joyce (Peter) Kloeber of O'Fallon, Illinois and LaVonne (Joe) Lodor of Kaufman, Texas; 3 sons, Darrell (Mavis) Mitchell of Monona, Iowa, Jack (Mary) Mitchell of Lake Jackson, Texas, and Richard (Lynn) Mitchell of Marion, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
