Chester Swanson

Chester S. Swanson, 91, of Muscatine, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 25, 2005, at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City. Funeral services were Thursday, October 27, at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services. Rev. Dan Robbs of Sycamore Baptist Church and Brian Shipply, VA Chaplain, officiated. Burial was in Sixteen Cemetery, Monona, Iowa, Friday, October 28. Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Chester Stanley Swanson was born November 4, 1913, in Coal Valley, Ill., the son of Edmond G. and Edith J. Johnson Swanson. Chester was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in the South Pacific during World War II from 1941 to 1944.

February 14, 1952, Chester was united in marriage to Bertha E. Schlitter at the Edgington Presbyterian Church in Edgington, Ill. Chester has been a resident of the Muscatine area since 1989. He farmed all his life and worked at the Viola sale barn and also drove cattle at the sale barn in Rock Island. When semi-retired from farming, Chester took up carpentry work for John Bush. He was a member of the Edgington Presbyterian Church where he was a Deacon and Trustee, enjoyed going to farm sales, fishing, and visiting with friends at the mall.

Chester will be deeply missed by his wife, Bertha; two sons, Timothy Swanson and Alan W. (Laurie) Swanson of Muscatine; one brother, Edmond Swanson of Reynolds, Ill.; and one grandson, Matthew S. Swanson of Muscatine.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Nathan Swanson; three brothers, Walter, Paul, and Don Swanson; and three sisters, Grace MacClathey, Pearl Van Dale, and Helen Hausch.

Casketbearers were Tim Swanson, Alan Swanson, Matthew Swanson, Don Schlitter, David Schlitter, Glen Stewart, and Rolland Genz.

A memorial has been established at the funeral home in Chester’s name.
