FLORA EMMA (MARFILIUS) KAMMERER

Flora Emma Kammerer, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Meier) Marfilius, was born 7 Feb., 1893. on a farm near Farmersburg, Clayton Co., Iowa.

Emma had one brother William, who later farmed the homestead and passed it on to his son.

She was baptized and confirmed at the Salem Evangelical Church(where the family attended). It stood south- west of the village of Froelich, where Emma’s father Charles served as Sunday School Superintendent for 40 years.

She received her education in the Hawkeye Country School near Farmersburg and remembered the names of all her teachers.. She taught Sunday School for many years in the Salem Evangelical and Pilgrim Ev. Churches.

In 1947 she was instrumental in organizing the Froelich U & I Club and served as one of its first officers; and was a member of the Leslie H. Smith Unit 519 American Legion Auxilliary. With the help of her daughter-in-law; Dolores, Emma entertained the club at GSC when she was there.

On 23 Feb., 1922 she was united in marriage to David Kammerer at her parents home in Froelich, Iowa. They lived on a farm near Froelich for 29 years. Her father had worked as a hired man on this farm when he came to Iowa in 1878. To this union three children were born.

David and Emma made their home in Monona in 1950 and did more than their share in contributing to the towns “garden city” image as their place was a beauty spot. She delighted in sharing her flowers and making bouquets for the church.

After David died in 1970, Emmas’ long time interest in quilts kept her occupied. She made a quilt for each grandchild. Emma took an active part in the social life of the GSC center and continued to draw strength from
church, family and friends, where she was Resident Of The Month.

Emma died Tuesday, 15 May, 1984 at the Good Samaritan Center, Postville, Allamakee County, Iowa, where she had resided for the past seven years, reaching the age of 91 yrs, 3 mo.,8 days.

Funeral Services were Friday, May 18, 1984 at 11:00 A.M. Garden City United Methodist (White) Church. Rev. Carroll Brown was the officiating clergyman. Organist: Mrs. Ivon Schultz, Soloist: Kenneth Timmerman. Songs: “How Great Thou Art”, “Under His Wing”; and congregation with “Abide With Me”.

Pallbearers were: David Kugel, Kevin Kammerer, Kenny Kammerer, David Kammerer, LuAnn Kammerer, Deb Schlenker, Pat Kammerer, and Karen Schroeder.

Burial was at the Monona city Cemetery. Visitation Thursday, May 17 - 2:00-9:00 p.m. at Schultz’s Funeral Home. In charge of services: Schultz’s Funeral Home, Monona, Iowa.

Preceeding her in death were her parents; her husband David, who died 8 July 1970; her great grandson, David William Kugel, Jr., and her brother Will Marfilius.

Surviving are her two sons, Justus of Monona; Reuben of Casper, Wyoming, her daughter Mrs. Donald (Wilma) Kugel of Postville; 8 grandchildren, 5 g grandchildren, and other relatives and many friends.
