Jesse Eugene Sloan, son of Francis M. and Almeda Elizabeth Sloan was born Feb. 06, 1869, near Sumner, Ill., where he spent the early years of his life.
He was united in marriage with Estella Williams Dec. 20, 1900, at Sumner, Ill. To this union were born three children: Mrs. Glen Oldfater of Arlington, Leroy Sloan of Volga, and Mrs. Joseph Peterson of Cedar Rapids.
They came to Iowa in 1906, making their home near Tipton in Cedar county for 18 years. A move was then made to Fayette county where they lived one year, after which they moved to Volga community.
On Jan. 05, 1950, he entered the Mussehl Home for the aged at Oneida where he died Friday morning, Feb. 15, 1952, at the age of 83 years and 9 days, following a series of light strokes.
Mr. Sloan was a member of the Volga Methodist church.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1944. He is survived by his three children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as a number of nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
A brief service for the immediate family was conducted in the Leroy Sloan home by the Rev. Floyd R. Maynard Sunday afternoon. The funeral then proceeded to the Methodist church where a large number of friends had gathered. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Kohls sang "Blessed Assurance" and "When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder." They were accompanied at the piano by Miss Joan Kohls. There were several lovely floral pieces. Following the service at the church, burial was made on the family lot in Hill Crest cemetery.
Among those from out of town attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hagerty of Stanwood, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Spencer, Mrs. Emma Fell and Olin Fell of Tipton; Miss Georgia Spencer, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Peterson, of Cedar Rapids, and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Mussehl of Oneida.
