James Henry Bowles, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bowles, was born at Attleborough, England, Feb. 11, 1874. After having been in failing health for some months, he died Feb. 12, 1955, at the age of 81 years and one day. Mr. Bowles secured his education at schools in England. He was married to Elizabeth Uttridge, Feb. 21, 1898. Two children were born to this union, a daughter, Lettie Louise who was born in England but died at the age of 18 months; a son, George, who was born in New York City.
Mr. and Mrs. Bowles emigrated from England and arrived in the United States on June 26, 1906. Mr. Bowles secured a position as a private chauffeur, which he held until coming to the state of Iowa in February, 1913. He purchased a farm east of Volga, where he lived for 20 years, becoming a member of the Methodist church in Volga and serving on the official board for 15 years. Next the couple moved to a farm north of Wadena, where they lived for seven years, moving then to Arlington and living there for 11 years until Mrs. Bowles' death, which occurred on April 27, 1951. Following the loss of his wife, Mr. Bowles made his home with his son George at Postville, Iowa, until his death.
While at Arlington, Mr. Bowles had his membership at the Methodist church there. He was the eldest of 11 children. His parents preceded him in death. Surviving James Henry Bowles are his son, George, of Postville, two grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 2:30 p.m. in the Methodist church at Volga, with the pastor, the Rev. Frank C. Greene, in charge. Singers were Mrs. Oliver Follon and Miss Peggy Robinson, the accompanist was Mrs. Wallace K. Oldfatherr.
Pallbearers were: Stanley Everitt, Volga; Arthur Everett, Volga; James Thyer, Fayette; Dale Domke, Fredericksburg; Lorenz Kuhse, Postville and Rodney Smith, Postville. Interment was in Hillcrest cemetery. Following the interment, lunch was served at the Methodist church in Volga.
