Mattie Drake, only daughter of Sarah White and Homer P. Drake was born in Milton, Vermont, Nov. 12, 1866. While a small child, she moved with her parents to Volga, where she attended school. Later, she attended Hopkinton college one year.
She was united in marriage with Edward Hayes on March 12, 1900. They moved to a farm near Volga, where they lived for 20 years, when they moved into Volga.
While health permitted, Mrs. Hayes was active in the Methodist church, of which she was a member.
On June 23, 1951, Mr. and Mrs. Hayes moved to the Lutheran home in Strawberry Point.
Mrs. Hayes died Jan. 28, 1955, at the Manchester hospital at the age of 88 years, 2 months and 16 days.
Survivors include her husband, Edward Hayes, Strawberry Point, and one half-sister, Mrs. Howard (Ala) Byam, Sioux Rapids, numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.
Services were held Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Methodist church, with burial in Hill Crest cemetery, Volga. The Rev. Wayne Carlson, Methodist minister of Strawberry Point, officiated.
Casket bearers were: Frank Phillips, Harry Rinkert, H. O. Probert, Herman Baars, John Follon and Fred Rinkert.
Music was provided by Mrs. Oliver Follon and Peggy Robinson.
Among the relatives and friends at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Benson and three children, Mrs. Eva Myers, Mr. and Mrs. Valmah Robinson and Ed Robinson, all of Blooming Prairie, Minn.; Mrs. Bessie Weber, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Weber, Appleton, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. John Gamm, Arlington; Mr. and Mrs. Perry Medberry, Elgin; Mrs. Howard Byam, Sioux Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Davis, Storm Lake; Mr. and Mrs. P. L. Byam, Algona; and Mr. and Mrs. George A. Brown of Grinell.
