DIED - At Wilson, North Carolina, April 24, in the Confederate Hospital, of wounds received in a reconnaissance near Washington, North Carolina, March 20, Orderly Sergeant David K. Hobart, Co. G, 44th Mass. Regiment, aged 28 years, son of Enoch Hobart, of Boston.

The arrival on Monday of the above notice in the Boston 'Transcript', was the signal for a general expression of surprise and grief by our citizens. So well known and so highly appreciated was the deceased, that the news travelled all over our city in a very short time -- a proof that it affected the entire community.

David K. Hobart came to this place in the autumn of 1857 and engaged in the boot and shoe trade. His urbanity and integrity won hosts of friends, and in the spring of 1860 he was elected Mayor of the city. His administration was impartial, energenic, and profitable to the city.

On the breaking out of the war he joined a company here and would have been its Captain, but jealousness among aspirants caused him to withdraw from the ranks and go to his native home, Boston. He there enlisted and participated in several battles before he received the wound which caused his death.

The city council was specially summoned and resolutions of respect to his memory were passed -- the city flag was placed at half-mast and various other tokens of personal and public sorrow were visible.

The deceased was generous to a fault; young, educated, fearless, and liberal in opinion, he was not such a model as would please sectarian zealots, but those who knew him best were aware that he cared but little for such narrow minded sensors. His standard of manliness was one of noble action rather than of puling pretension, and such were his qualities of head and heart that he won the warm regard of all who came within the circle of his acquaintance.

Many here were expecting his return in the future, but alas "He sleeps his last sleep - he has fought his last battle. No sound shall awake him to glory again!"
