James H. Adams, 81, son of Nicholas Adams and Polly Howard Adams, was born at Elkader, Dec. 24, 1886, and died at his home in Volga on Feb. 19, 1948, after being ill a few weeks.

He was employed as a bridge carpenter on the railroad for many years. About 21 years ago, he and his family moved to Volga where he has since resided.

He was married to Clara Shaw who preceded him in death. They had two children: Mrs. Della Sage, St. Cloud, Fla., and a son William, now deceased. In 1896 he was married to Mary Miller at Guttenberg. She died a number of years ago. Seven children were born to them, a daughter, Mrs. Hazel Bailey of Michigan, and a son Victor of Spring Green, Wis., died in 1942 and 1943 respectively.

He is survived by three sons and two daughters, Arthur of Volga; Joe of Elkader and R. D. Adams, Concord, N.H.; Mrs. Dorothy Cornwell, Greeley, and Mrs. Ruby Huntington, Strawberry Point; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; also three sisters, Mrs. Mina DeBow and Mrs. Myrtle Mohn, Elkader, and Mrs. Clara Paul, Red Bluff, Calif.: and two brothers, Oren Adams, Manchester, and Charles Henry Adams, Dubuque. A brother, Orseamus, preceded him in death, also a sister and brother died in infancy.

Services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian church, with the pastor, the Rev. Ben Cochenet, in charge. Mrs. R. W. Duff and Mrs. Archie Fox provided the music.

Casket bearers were: H. O. Probert, F. G. Cummings, Frank Oldfather, Archie Fox, Edward Everitt and George Cassidy, Elkader.

Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery, Volga.
