Clayton County Register, 19 Feb. 1948.

William B. Bennington was born Jan. 05, 1860 on the old homestead east of Volga and died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1948, at his home in town.

He was the son of Samuel and Esther Bidwell Bennington, early English pioneers. He received his education in the rural schools and was associated with his father and brothers in raising purebred horses and cattle.

He remained on the home farm until his eyesight failed, when he moved to Volga, which has since been his home.

Mr. Bennington never married, but is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers; he was the last of the family and was 88 years, one month and seven days old at the time of his death. He had been totally blind for 15 years.

Services were held Saturday, Feb. 14, at the Volga Methodist church, with the Rev. L. J. Faris officiating. Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery, Volga.

Pallbearers were: H. C. Andreae of Oelwein, D. J. Crain, R. W. Duff, H. O. Probert, E. T. Smith and Wm. Christeleit.

Those from out of town present at the funeral were: George McAleer and son Gene, Elmwood Park, Ill.; Mrs. Bertha Stinger, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Stinger, Springville; Mrs. Florence Harbaugh, Cedar Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. Lester Bennington, Fayette; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Bennington, Lima; Mrs. Donald Woods and son Cecil, Maynard; Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Smith, Grinnell; Frank Leahy, Wadena; H. C. Andreae, Oelwein.
