Clayton County Register, 28 Dec. 1944.

Funeral services for Miss Helge Hattie Torkleson, 85, were held Sunday afternoon at the Highland Lutheran Church, Rev. O. Nesset, pastor, officiated. She died Dec. 22, at 7:00 a.m. after several years of ill health.

She was the daughter of the late Lars and Margaret Torkleson, born Feb. 22, 1859, at Numedale, Norway, and came to America with her parents at the age of two. They settled in the state of Wisconsin for a few years, and later moved to their own farm in Highland township, where Hattie Torkleson made her home most of the time thereafter. She lived in North Dakota while home-steading a claim there, but this she later sold, and returned to Iowa. Her chief occupation was that of dressmaking.

She was confirmed Oct. 19, 1873, at the Norway Lutheran church near St. Olaf, Iowa: and was charter member of the Highland Lutheran church; an active worker in the Dorcas circle and contributor in all church activities and mission work. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Mrs. Tilda Leland, and two brothers, Theodore and Halvor.

Surviving are three nieces, Mrs. Roy (Hilda) Leuchtenmacher of Elgin; Mrs. W. A. (Minnie) Sheeley and La Vina Torkleson of Chicago.

The hymns "Behold the Host Arrayed in White," and "The Old Rugged Cross" were sung as solos by Mrs. Carl Torkelson, and "Nearer My God to Thee" as a duet by Mrs. C. O. Torkelson and Mrs. Carl Torkelson, with Mrs. Orville Larson as pianist.

Casket bearers were John Erickson, Alfred Cook, Herman Schoien, Louis Gregerson, C. O. Torkelson and Adolph Larson.

Among the relatives from a distance attending the funeral were: Mrs. W. A. Sheeley, Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Emil Johnson, Clermont; Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Powell and Thomas, Mr. and Mrs. George Nydeggar, Elgin; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Knudson, Henry Johnson and Mrs. Oscar Olson, St. Olaf.
