December 17, 1944, at her home in Boardman township occurred the death of Mrs. Kathryn Teressa Roethler from a heart attack suffered Thursday evening, Dec. 14, after which she never regained consciousness.
Kathryn Teressa Hurley was born in Highland township, the daughter of Catherine Nevins and Bernard Hurley. She was from a family of eleven children.
Mrs. Roethler graduated from Elkader high school and attended Highland Park college in Des Moines, after which she followed the teaching profession in Clayton, Chickasaw and Harrison counties.
She was united in matrimony to Louis P. Roethler Feb. 16, 1915, at Volga City. Her home was made in New Hampton until 1933 when she moved to Elkader. Nine children were born to their union, one having preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband and eight children, Mae Rita, Lou Ella, LaVonne and Mrs. Virgil Meyers, Bill, Joe, Dale and Reynold who is serving in the U.S. Navy; two grandchildren, Jerrie and Mary Lou Meyers, four brothers, Jerry of Epworth, John J. Hurley of McGregor, M. R. Hurley of Elkader and Tim Hurley of Volga; and one sister, Mrs. Mike Conley of Volga. Four sisters, Ellen Carey, Ann Burns and Agnes Striegel, all of Chicago, and one brother, Dr. W. J. Hurley of Chicago, preceded her in death.
She was looking forward to the return of her son, Reynold, of the U.S.N., who planned to spend Christmas with her.
The Requiem Mass was read by Rt. Rev. Msgr. J. P. Taken Saturday at 10 a.m. Burial was in St. Joseph's cemetery. The pall bearers were: Bernard Hurley, U.S.N., Harold Smith, Merlin Tobin, Roy Noel, Jean McMahon and Henry Schluetter.
The relatives and friends from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hurley of Litchville, N.D.; Mrs. Mayme Doyle of Davenport; Pat J. Carey and Patsy, Bernard Hurley of U.S.N.; Colette Hurley of Madison, Wis.; Callista, Josephine and Roy Hurley and Mrs. Greg Eiischeid of Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. Jerry P. Hurley, Mr. and Mrs. Jean McMahon of Epworth; Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Tobin, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Smith and son Tommie of Farley; Mr. and Mrs. John J. Hurley of McGregor; Tim Hurley and Mr. and Mrs. Mike Conley of Volga; John Little of the U.S. Marines; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Little, Luke and Delores of Strawberry Point; Mrs. George Weydert, Henry Schluetter, Mrs. Bill Brown, Albert Tenge, of New Hampton; Mr. and Mrs. Ed McNehl of Postville; Frank Watson of Guttenberg; and Mr. and Mrs. George Heck of Garnavillo.
Dear mother you have left us,
A place which can ne'er be filled;
A home that was so happy
With children, eight, instilled.
The hours they are so dreary,
Vacancies all around,
And everywhere rememberance
Of a loving mother found.May her soul rest in peace.
