MCGREGOR: Staff Sergeant Donald P. Burckhart [sic], 28, was killed in action in France November 10, according to a message received by his parents from the war department last week. He had previously been reported as missing in action with the infantry in France. Memorial services were held for him at St. Mary's church Tuesday morning.
Sgt. Burckhart enlisted in the army in November, 1940, served two years in Iceland after he went overseas in August 1941, and then was sent to England. He was wounded July 30 in France, hospitalized in England, and later returned to action.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Burckhart, farmers near McGregor, and was born July 29, 1916. He is survived by his parents, one brother Fred near McGregor, and three sisters, Mrs. Harley Owen, Berwyn, Ill., Mrs. Clyde Bollman, Monona, and Mrs. Raymond Thomas, Franklin Park, Ill.

Notes: correct surname spelling is BURCKART. His remains were returned home for burial in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery in August 1948. North Iowa Times, 8/12/1948, printed a photo of Donald, along with another obituary, at the time of his funeral & burial services. The photo is too poor quality to display here.
