Clayton County Register, 08 June 1944.

ELKPORT: Fred Gerloff, Sr., 88, died Sunday morning, June 04, at 2 o'clock at his home here. Old age was the cause of his death. He enjoyed good health until February, when he suffered a heart attack from which he never recovered.

Mr. Gerloff was born Feb. 01, 1856, in Mecklenburg, Germany, and was baptized when three days old. He came to America with his parents when four years old and settled on a farm near Guttenberg, where they were members of the Lutheran church. His mother died when he was a small boy and his father four years ago. Mr. Gerloff was confirmed in St. John's Lutheran church at Guttenberg.

He was married to Louise Putzier at Clayton Center, Nov. 18, 1885. They resided on a farm near Garber until 1920, when they retired to Elkport, where he lived until his death.

He was preceded in death by his wife and two children, Amanda and Elmer. Surviving him are: Wm. Gerloff of Cortland, N.Y.; Elizabeth (Mrs. Henry Beeh), Garber; Martha (Mrs. Wm. Horstman), Guttenberg; Adelia, (Mrs. Ed Haught), Strawberry Point; Lillian, (Mrs. Arnem Harbaugh), Mohalla, Ore.; Fred on the home farm near Garber; Clara (Mrs. Frank Amling), Elkport; and Zelda, at home; also 27 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Tressa Widerman of Madison, Wis.

He was a member of the Lutheran church here for many years.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the church with Rev. E. H. Mueller officiating. Music was furnished by the male quartet, Harlan Zittergruen, Lowell Thein, Lavern and Marvin Kuehl, accompanied by Mrs. E. H. Mueller.
