Clayton County Register, 18 May 1944.
The body of William Eggers, 43, was found in the hog house of his farm near Farmersburg, in Wagner township, early Sunday morning with a bullet wound in his head. In the absence of County Coroner D. E. Lowe, Acting Coroner George Ehrhardt was called. Mr. Ehrhardt said it was a clear of suicide, Mr. Eggers apparently having shot himself in the mouth with a .38 caliber revolver, and no inquest would be held. Despondency over ill health was believed to have been the cause of his death.
Thorwald Thompson, an employee on the farm, discovered the body at about 6:30 in the morning.
Mr. Eggers leaves his wife and two sons, Gunther, 6, and Henry, 4.
William Eggers was born Oct. 24, 1900, in Kiel, Holstein, Germany, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Johannes Eggers. He came to America about 1927 and made his home with his uncle William Eggers of Farmersburg. Later he worked on various farms in the county and in 1934 returned to Germany where he married Anna Margaret Wieben, Jan. 10, 1935. They returned to Garnavillo where they established their home and Mr. Eggers in company with George Wirth and William Bodenschatz formed the WEB Transport firm. About four years ago after the death of Mr. Wirth, Mr. Eggers sold his interest in the company to Mr. Bodenschatz and moved with his family to the farm which has since been their home.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Harold Adix of Farmersburg at the home and at the Dickman funeral home at Garnavillo Tuesday afternoon. Burial was made in the Garnavillo cemetery.
Besides his wife and children, Mr. Eggers is survived by one brother, Heinrich Eggers in Germany.
