John Jacob, son of John H. and Mary Zearley, was born at Garber, Dec. 30, 1863, and died Nov. 20, 1943, at his home in Colesburg, at the age of 79 years, 10 months and 20 days, after an illness of nearly four years.
He was married to Emma C. Lewis of Osterdock, Sept. 17, 1885. To this union six children were born, one of whom died in early infancy. In February, 1890, nearly 54 years ago, while still a young man, he joined the then German Baptist church, now known as the Church of the Brethren.
He spent his entire life in this community and many friends mourn his death.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Eli G. of Custer, S.D.; Harvey Leroy and Earl V., both of Waterloo; one daughter, Lizzie, now Mrs. Tommie Hook of Greeley. One son, Clive, and an infant daughter preceded him in death. Two brothers, Lou A. of Garber and William H., Stoneville, S.D., also survive, together with nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 2 p.m., at the Fairview church, his pastor, the Rev. Max Hartsough, officiating. He was buried in the Hansel cemetery.
