Clayton County Register, 22 July 1943.
Discovery of the body of Ed Schwartz [sic], 70-year-old bachelor, on the bank of the Turkey River about a mile southeast of town Wednesday, ended a two-day search. The body was badly decomposed but it was evident the man had shot himself in the head with a .32 caliber revolver, which was found beneath the body. County Coroner D. E. Lowe pronounced the act suicide, and no inquest was held.
Schwartz disappeared Saturday about noon from the Oehring drug store where he had been working. He failed to appear for lunch at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Walthers where he had been staying and alarmed by his continued absence they notified the Sheriff on Monday.
Mr. Schwartz came to Elkader several years ago. He is survived by one brother, Charles of Hitchkock, S.D. Another brother William, preceded him in death here several years ago. Friends believe that Schwartz was despondent over financial matters. Funeral arrangements are pending word from the brother.
