Corkery, Sara Isadore (Barton) 1874 - 1943

Mrs. Sara Isadore Corkery died at her home in Elkader at 10 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 11, after a weeks illness.

Mrs. Corkery, the former Sara Isadore Barton, was born at Volney, Iowa, Feb. 20, 1874, the daughter of Thomas and Julia Barton. She was married Oct. 03, 1893, to James Edward Corkery at Cox Creek. They were the parents of 10 children: Raymond, killed in action in World War I; Irene, at home; Harold, who died June 10, 1939; Paul, of Chicago, Ill.; Hugh, of Detroit, Mich.; Loretta, who died Nov. 22, 1929; Jack, of Chicago, Ill.; Cpl. James of the U.S. army, somewhere in North Africa, and Mary and Helen at home.

Mrs. Corkery also lived at Wadena and Lost Nation, Iowa. In 1932 the family moved to Elkader.

Besides her seven children, Mrs. Corkery is survived by seven grandchildren, one sister Adie Barton and four brothers, Dan, Ray and Tom of Elkader, and Dr. Hugh P. of Chicago.

Mrs. Corkery received her education in the Volga public school and before her marriage was a school teacher. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors, Catholic Foresters, Service Star Legion, American Legion Auxiliary and National Council of Catholic Women.

The funeral services were held at St. Joseph's Catholic church Sunday morning, Jan. 17, with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. James P. Taken and the Rev. Father D. T. Noonan, officiating. Burial was made in the Volga cemetery with the following as pall bearers: Charles Meder, William Walch, James Cain, Leo Kelleher, Jack Donlon and Richard Wolf.

Out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were: the Francis Corkery family, and John Corkery family and the Bill Corkery family, all of Wadena; The Harry Corkery family of Fayette; the Tom Corkery family, the John Corkery family, the Cecil Corkery family and the Floyd Duffy family, all of Sumner; Mrs. Ervil Brinkman of Oelwein; Dr. Hugh P. Barton, Charles Barton, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Corkery, and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Corkery, all of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Corkey of Detroit, Mich.; Mrs. John Boegner, of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Ryan, Laurence Raftis family and Dan Raftis family, all of Oelwein.
