The first Strawberry Point casualty for World War II was reported last week, when Mr. and Mrs. Harford G. Sargent received a telegram stating that their son, Pvt. Verle Sargent, had been killed in action on Dec. 5 in the southwest Pacific area. Memorial services were conducted from the Gill funeral chapel, Sunday afternoon, Jan. 3, by the Rev. R. Park Anderson, pastor of the Methodist church. The youngest son, Verle Stanley Howard Sargent, was born at Strawberry Point, Sept. 2, 1918, and received his education in the rural and Strawberry Point public schools. Previous to his induction in the U.S. army, Nov. 27, 1941, he had been employed on the Curly Schmidt farm, near Arlington. He left on New Year's Day, 1942, for Camp Roberts, Calif., where he was given army training in the infantry. Last April he left the United States and was later transferred to New Guinea.
Surviving, besides his parents, are his aged grandfather, Emery H. Sargent of Strawberry Point, and the following seven sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Carl Moyle of Strawberry Point, Mrs. Albert Brooks of West Union, Mrs. T. F. Guinand of Ithaca, N.Y., Mrs. Leroy Lewin of Guttenberg, Mrs. Robert Fredrick and Miss Lois Sargent of Moline, Ill., and Miss Evelyn Sargent of Rock Island, Ill.; Robert, Albert, and Donald Sargent of Strawberry Point. Four brothers died in infancy.
